The usage is not that simple. You can customize the scales' profile in the nodegroup 'Scales Shape'. This is going to be used for all instances of the same nodegroup of Sc'les.
So, if you want multiple different scales patterns in one file:
Append the 'Scales Generic - APPEND' material for each one. That creates a copy with a new Scale Shape for you.
My colouring setup includes b/w vertex colors from bottom to top that can be graded with a color ramp. You can use any other base colours though.
The file is built for Blender 2.8 and for some unknown reason it currently does not work with 2.79.
It is built for Cycles with micro-displacement but you can also use it with Eevee.
